Why I started RealLife Learning

Hi, I'm Carla - founder of RealLife Learning and a homeschooling mum based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

RealLife Learning began at my kitchen table after I made the difficult decision to take my Year 9 son out of traditional school and begin homeschooling.

At first, I thought the hardest part would be keeping up with the curriculum. What I didn't expect was what I would notice once we started learning together at home. On paper, my son had been doing well. He could solve algebra problems. He could write an essay. He was not failing at school.

But in everyday life, there were gaps that genuinely surprised me.

He could work through abstract maths, but he was not confident comparing which product was better value at the shops. He could write a formal essay, but everyday communication - sending a clear message, asking for help, speaking up, or explaining a problem - felt much harder.

That was the moment I realised something important:

He had not been failing. He had been learning skills that didn't translate into real life.

So I started creating the kind of resources I wished already existed.

Practical, real world lessons that teach the skills teens actually use - money, shopping, time, budgeting, communication, decision-making and everyday confidence - in a way that feels useful and relatable.

Today, RealLife Learning is a growing range of printable workbooks for Australian teens aged 13-16. Each unit is designed to be clear, structured and genuinely usable, with real-life examples, step-by-step lessons, a complete Parent & Answer Guide, and evidence tools families can keep for their homeschool records.

The lessons are built to support different confidence levels within the same workbook. Teens can start with guided practice, move into everyday application, and take on stretch tasks when they are ready.

I create these resources for families like mine - homeschool families, and any parent whose teen is capable but disengaged, anxious, neurodivergent, overwhelmed, or tired of learning that feels disconnected from the real world.
